THE STORY
Cradled by Grace is an intimate documentary that chronicles the creation of the groundbreaking “Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra” by composer Sam Lipman in collaboration with the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Austin, Texas, the film follows Sam and the trumpet soloist for whom the piece was written, iconic jazz trumpeter Ephraim Owens. These two musicians come from distinct cultural and musical backgrounds, and as they join forces with conductor Peter Bay to produce a work that blends classical and jazz influences, the collaboration proves to be complex. The documentary captures the highs and lows of the creative process, delving into the complexities of artistic collaboration, conflicting visions, and personal struggle.
As the filmmakers explore the evolving relationships between the musicians, the film also highlights the significance of this concerto within Austin's music scene, where it resonates deeply with the city’s legacy as the "live music capital of the world." Against this creative journey, the Austin Symphony Orchestra grapples with its own uncertain future. As the city's oldest arts institution, it must find new ways to engage audiences in an era of declining patronage, and Sam’s concerto becomes a high-stakes experiment in musical reinvention.
But the stakes rise even higher when an unexpected crisis emerges: Ephraim, the very musician for whom the piece was written, faces a serious health challenge that threatens his ability to perform. With the concerto’s premiere fast approaching, the film captures the emotional weight of the moment—will Ephraim be well enough to take the stage? Will the Symphony’s gamble on a genre-blending composition revitalize its audience? And will Sam’s career as a composer be propelled forward or placed in jeopardy?
At its core, Cradled By Grace is a meditation on human connection—the vulnerability and trust required in the creative process, the cultural and personal forces that shape artistic expression, and the power of music to transcend barriers, bringing people together in moments of profound beauty and uncertainty.
